Known to us grandchildren as Nana and Papa, Amelia and Scott Ashley opened S & A Sandwich Shop over 60 years ago (we always called it "the café"); and with that began a tradition of excellence.

Nana passed down the standard of excellence in her food and in the service she provided at home, at the café and at family events. Also passed down was a sense of entrepreneurship. In the early 1900's, a time when black women had few rights, Nana was the only one of her nine siblings to graduate college and to become a teacher. Later, with the support of her husband and family, she bought property, built and managed apartment units and the café. She was also active in her community and church. She was a businesswoman, teacher, mother and wife.

Her daughter Scottie (my mother) picked up the torch when she opened Ashley's Fine Cuisine offering catering and a weekly meal service from that same café. The standard is still evident two generations later. Amelia's Place continues the commitment to excellence – Excellence in food preparation, Excellence in Service, and Excellence in our commitment to our customers.
